Old Blue Water

On Tuesday 11 December, Pookaverse boarded the “21 DE MAYO” to take a 4-hr ‘Navegacion’ from Puerto Natales up the Fiordo Ultima Esperanza to visit the Glacier at Monte Balmaceda and the Serrano Glacier. And return.

The following pictures document that trip and are submitted in lieu of the innumerable facts that you can discover online about this place.

Ahead is Monte Balmaceda standing at over 2035m. On its Eastern Slope, the Balmaceda glacier.

Only to say that the whole day had many spectacular views. Not seen by either hooms. Apart from another mass shooting in America, retreat of glacial ice is big news at the moment. And for good reason.

When you see the Glacier at Monte Balmaceda at first hand. And note that just under five years ago this suspended blue cascade of ancient ice touched the very river that the boat rests on. Brings it home to you.

And there is sadness. For loss of something so intensely blue. Losing its form. On the terminal ward. Drooling away to itself. Into a river of cloudy green.

And a partial understanding. Witnessed. Of the course upon which hooms seems irrevocably set. This cannot be put back. This cannot be undone. The roller-coaster has left the station and is climbing.

If only it was the apocalypse on 21 December 2012. “Unfortunately…”, as the Houhynmms commented under clothes-pegged noses. Mouths full of half-roasted invunchee leg. Their supreme prize from a hunting trip to Chiloe Archipelago.

Another panorama

Another panorama of restless blue…

“…you don’t get off that easily. Now pass the salt. Stinking hooms”

    Hey Bruv and Big Sis,

The Glacier is honestly one of the most pheonomemal sights ever!!
We’re missing you both loads! Its so nice this year at home as after last years debacle with the no- show kitchen man, the house is beautiful and shining with a real christmas tree and tasteful decorations. 🙂
To feel that you are here with us, we have your wedding garland on our immaculately dusted shelf, and one apple on our tree that we brought back by accident from Quainton with our presents and gubbins.
Mum is really missing you already saying “It won’t be the same” while loving the experiences that you are enjoying, vicariously, as am I.
We all love you very much and daily wait on your latest adventure.
    You uber-lucky love-phools!!!!!!
