Happy Christmas

….a strange day for Pookaverse. Of high winds, sirens in the hills of Valparaiso. Empinadas for Christmas Dinner. Not much open in Valparaiso today.

Pookaverse walked a circular route of 7km around the harbour and container port and had an ice cream next to the sea. Before boarding a small fishing boat for a tour of the harbour. And a close view of three frigates bought by Chile from Great Britain in 2005. It is a surprise to learn from Martin – an Australian who married Lysette and now runs The Yellow House – that Chile has always maintained a very close relationship with the UK.

Prince Charles came out to Valparaiso for the handover 7 years ago and earned a great deal of respect. Another interesting fact is that Chilean radar, information and logistical support greatly assisted the British Task Force during the Falklands War. Despite the later interlude between Margaret Thatcher and Auguste Pinochet that lead to his arrest and eventual non-trial.

The Yellow House can be picked out from most places in the city.

From the harbour and back up to the Yellow House by one of  several operating Funicular Railways that provide the citizens of Valparaiso with a relatively cheap and efficient means to make it to the top of the numerous hills upon which this interesting city is built.

With Rohan supporting another cold and both hooms nursing mosquito bites, Pookaverse has chosen to have Christmas Lunch tomorrow as more restaurants are likely to be open.

Not in the red zones for their are red zones in this city notorious for a minority of pickpockets that have proven very capable of relieving Gringo’s of their Cameras, Handbags and Jewelry.

Though not just restricted to Gringos. Lysette who is a Chilean had her necklace snatched as they walked through one of the red zones of the city quite recently.

And when Pookaverse has taken two guided tours into the city itself, their is a palpable sense of tension in these areas. You don’t have to walk far from a rich neighbourhood to a poor neighbourhood. Allayed somewhat by the common sense of our guides.

Allayed greatly by the enigmatic Boris. Who amongst his many talents teaches cookery at the adjacent Cookery school. One of those memorable people who through sheer force of character operate on an entirely different level to the rest of us mere mortals. He also likes having his picture taken. As you can see.

It’s not all doom and gloom. So on this Christmas Night, Pookaverse will show you some of the images captured from the many different levels upon which this city is built.

Hope you had a fantastic day and plenty of good things to eat, a light doze over the afternoons telly and more chocolate and gift receipts than you know what to do with.
