The American Road Trip – Leg 1 Highlights

Pookaverse plans to spend 88 days in America from 05 September 2012 (Boston Logan Airport) to 02 December 2012 (Newark Liberty International Airport) taking four ‘non-o’clock  jumps’, counter-clockwise in an attempt to realise the beguiling allure of this vast country and the American road trip.  Arranging the first part of this trip has been a learning experience from which some potentially useful information has been discovered which we want to pass on to you dear reader should you want to explore along similar lines.

For a start.  Pookaverse has found that when you intend to visit a really big place, it is useful to have a really big map.

05 September 2012 – Arrive Boston Logan Airport 09:40pm EST

Leg 1 – East to West – Boston MA to Seattle WA –

08 September 2012 12:00: Collect car from Boston Logan Airport  and then drive to Seattle (4500 miles approx) to drop off the car on the 08 October 2012. For car hire in the US, the cheapest rental scheme (by $1750 USD that is) was found through this website Bear in mind that we are travelling one-way so incur an additional $250 USD surcharge  +19% sales tax. We’ll let you know if it is worth it…

Landfall…Boston Massachusetts…time to retrieve the colonies for Her Majesty from those infernal tea-dunkers 🙂

Niagra Falls…careful Alison. There’s Zombies in Monroeville Mall, Pittsburgh and they’ll have your hand off!

Chicago…the ‘Windy City’…named after the filibustering of its politicians and not for the icy winds off Lake Michagan

Devils Tower, Wyoming…the spiritual heart of pookaverse’s journey…and we haven’t even begun

Highlights: Boston MA, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island.  Early-fall colours in St Jonsbury New Hampshire – via Albany and onto Niagara Falls in Buffalo, NY.  Niagara Falls?…  “Slowly I turned…“.

Skip Michigan and Detroit – travelling via Indianapolis to the alluringly named Indiana Dunes and finally to Chicago.

From Chicago to Minneapolis and then across the Great Plains via Sioux Falls to Rapid City, SD.

Mount Rushmore, the site of Custer’s Last Stand and the geographical centre of the US are nearby.

Then on to Devil’s Tower, Wyoming to visit the Black Hills and one of the most striking natural phenomenons and  important Native American  spiritual sites on our journey.

Yellowstone National Park beckons only 260 miles further on.

Pookaverse apologises to you dear reader as we cannot think any further ahead at this point. Let’s see if we can get there first. Let’s see what happens 😉
